The ContiSportContact 5P is a high performance summer tire built for serious grip.
Review Highlights: The Continental ContiSportContact 5P is a decent tire for gripping roads in dry and lightly wet environments with an average level of ride comfort. Being that this is such a soft tire, tread can wear down very quickly and require replacements which can be disappointing.
Continental’s Black Chilli Technology have been integrated into this specific tire for more aggressive traction from a cold start take off.
We have thoroughly tested a set of 4+ tires on the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R (Big brother to the GTI) with mixed feelings.
Let’s dig into it…
This is a great tire for the dry pavement and wet weather conditions. You never skip a beat, especially if you have these mounted on an all wheel drive vehicle. If you are currently using a tire like the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, then you are going to notice an improvement with steering into sharp corners and overall better response from the steering wheel.
The tires are soft however, and seem to catch flats easily in our experience if you ride on any rough surfaces or encounter potholes frequently. The current odometer on the car we tested reads just shy over 20,000 miles.
Unfortunately the current set of tires is not original from factory. Individual ContiSportContact 5P tires in the front and back of the car have been replaced on multiple occasions over the past year and a half.
If you get the 5P SSR (Self Supporting Runflat) you can have an additional level of comfort knowing the tire can continue on for a short distance after picking up a screw or nail in many cases.
ContiSportContact 5P Treadwear
If you are running a set of these on your car, you may be tempted to wait 5000 miles before rotating them, but from our experience and many others who have purchased these, the treadwear life on can be short on these Continental tires.
As for ride noise and comfort, these tires do well as long as you keep them on very flat surfaces. Pot holes are going to be your enemy just as with any low profile tire.
Noise Level Testing
We measured the noise of the cabin with these tires in the Volksawagen R.
The speed was performed at a constant 60 miles per hour in eco mode with AC and audio both turned off. Note: Decibel levels indicate how quiet the tire is at various speeds.
The lower the number the quieter the ride.
Constant 60 mph Speed Test: 71.9 db

Final Thoughts And Recap
We believe the Continental ContiSportContact 5P is a modest tire for aggressive handling and high speeds, but the wear on tread goes quickly and the noise level and comfort based on our testing is only mediocre at best. For a little more money, we believe an upgrade to the ExtremeContact Sport is a better option if plan on sticking with the Continental brand. For a little less money, the Firehawk Indy 500 and the G-Max RS would offer a much better treadlife and improved traction.
